Flea talked about how he got a bike called a “Chopper”, like the dog in Stand by Me.
Chad Smith recalled how his family drove from Michigan to Florida, and that’s a really long drive. He also spoke about having a babysitter got drunk and passed out, and his parents came home and found her completely sauced. She had passed out and Smith took the opportunity to put chocolate pudding on her eyes. He was nine at the time.

The Grand Rapids native’s sometimes-unrestrained rise to stardom began when Anthony Kiedis helped form funk-rock’s Red Hot Chili Peppers in the 1980s, a band that has since sold 70 million albums worldwide and won seven Grammy Awards.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers are to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 and are currently touring in support of their tenth studio album, “I’m With You,” which has also been nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Album at the 54th annual Grammy Awards in 2012.

Anthony Kiedis: Thank you for the flattering usage of the word “soaring” as it pertains to my band. Professionally speaking, releasing our record, “I’m With You,” was the highlight and something like giving birth after a 24-month pregnancy. We were dying to get it out.

It’s hard to watch friends and family struggle with health or other spiritual issues, but it’s got to be there for a reason. Lowlights are the great catalyst for growth. … (NBA’s Los Angeles) Lakers losing to the (Dallas) Mavericks in the Western Conference finals was a lowlight.
Q: What will be the headline for you a year from now?
Anthony Kiedis: “Kiedis Kidnapped by Nude Female Surf Aliens.”

Q: If you could visit only one place in Michigan, where would you go?
Anthony Kiedis: Mom’s kitchen. An old dirt road along the shores of Lake Michigan. The smell of pine needles baking on the sandy shores of some forgotten bend in a faraway creek.

His talent for carving and creating objects out of wood was superb. I have one of his tables in my bathroom. … Meanwhile, Michigan has not been shy about sharing profound humans with the world. I could never name them all, but here are a few that brought beauty, joy and wonder into the world: Magic Johnson, George Clinton (not born but lo-o-ong time resident), Charles Lindbergh, Iggy Pop, Gilda Radner, Sugar Ray Robinson, Del Shannon, Stevie Wonder and Charles Lautner.

Q: Will the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ tour make a stop in your hometown?
Anthony Kiedis: Hard to imagine that we would not be playing in Grand Rapids come 2012, but I haven’t actually seen it on the schedule. Could be an arena-availability thing. Fingers crossed for a Grand Rapids show. Have a great new year, all ye Michiganders.

It’s just a wonderful thing, it sounds good, it feels good, everything about it is wonderful.
Anthony: Yeah, I mean, for lack of a more articulate explanation, it really does feel like the greatest drug on Earth, but without the negative side-effect or hangover, it’s like if I want to feel connected , or if I want to feel a flood, I find music that fits the whole situation. Sometimes, I don’t even know what that is I search for and I find it incidentally thanks to the music. Did you hear music from Soft Machine (Josh nods and says yes) and I did not know that I had a part of Soft Machine in me. Let’s say, Music is like a good pair of pants.

RTL2: So guys, tenth album and in every album of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the fifth member of the band is always Los Angeles.
Anthony: It’s L.A. I didn’t expect you to say that, but I like it.
Josh: We spoke about L.A. before the interview, (Josh says that he feels so bad about the reporter’s paper in front of him btw). L.A. is a place where a lot of people move to, it’s got a lot of different energies. So you know, this band is made up of four different people, from different places in this world and there is a thing about L.A. L.A. shaped this group from the beginning to the point where it stands today. I do not believe that one day somebody came up with the idea to write a song about Los Angeles, but it comes up naturally in our songs.
Anthony: L.A. is like a black velvet hole in the universe (and in your pants) It attracts people, dreams, and hopes. You bump into each other incidentally in this black hole and you become friends, you do things, you have sand in your shoes and dust in your eyes. And you do other things in other holes. And it is nice to have a fifth member, especially when it is Los Angeles, the City that his it’s own organism.

Anthony: Is it not nice?

RTL2: Great and I was guessing and I did a little reflection with whom you are. With the audience? Till now you were known for more fantasmagoric and surreal clip and on the clip for Raindance Maggie one can see your fans, it is a filmed concert, you are very present on Facebook and youtube, we never saw you as close to your audience, but God knows, you were.
Anthony: Thank goodness, fans and people around our group are very interesting people, and I assure you, sometimes more interesting than we are. So we acknowledge them and this clip was made to turn the camera and the focus towards them, to show our interest in them. It sort of relieved us too, and I find the clip very interesting.
RTL2: Genial. Pensé y reflexioné sobre con quién están. ¿Con el público? RTL2: If I ask you the first thing to know about the album “I’m with you“ and the last thing to know about the album it might be interesting.
Anthony: The first and the last thing to know about this record. We nearly called it “Monarchy of Roses“ because we had no better idea and I remember I went biking with the producer of the album, Rick Rubin and he said it was no good choice, because one could have the impression that we ran out of ideas and that we just used the title of a song. And that’s when we kind of went back to search for something new and thank God, Josh gave us the title. Last thing is that both “Meet me at the corner“ and “Dance, Dance, Dance“ would have nearly been left out of the album, because we wanted to do an album with 11 or 12 songs, even though we wrote about 50 songs. But after some reflection, it would have been too painful not to include those two songs. And we had nearly finished the album, but last minute, those two songs sneaked on the album. They didn’t get tagged on it, but in the end, they fit perfectly.

RTL2: I’d like to talk about your album cover with you. Every time, it is a really different universe. And you are rarely seen on your album covers. Why? Don’t you want to be seen?
Anthony: I see us inside the leaf, it do not think it is necessary on the outside. Some album covers are perfectly suited pictures of the people and this band has done that before. We already did it on “Blood, Sugar“, Mother’s Milk“, “Freaky Styley“. It is just a way to change things, also our album covers. It could have been something different, but we chose that. And I love it. It is great and we are happy with our cover and our fly.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers return to Scotland for the first time in four years tomorrow. And despite being together for almost 40 years, they still think every gig they play is their last.
The band, from Los Angeles, are Eighties survivors.
Their first gig in 1983, as young schoolboys, was meant to be a one-off.
But the group, then calling themselves Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem, were asked back. And even multiple personnel changes failed to stop their ascent to be one of the world's greatest rock bands.
Singer Anthony Kiedis, 49, revealed the secret to their longevity.
He said: "It's still one night only - that's what it feels like. That's why it happened. We never thought about being a rock and roll band. We only wanted to play one night, that's how we keep it alive. We all have a different type of intelligence and we want to honour the things that put us where we are and that keep us there."
Original bassist Flea, drummer Chad Smith and new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer play a sold-out gig at the SECC in Glasgow tomorrow night.
They last played Glasgow at Hampden Park in 2007, a year after they played T in the Park. The rumours are, they will play T in the Park next year.
Another secret to their success is they don't think about what lies ahead. Luck gave the band a start and they have continued to work with what life throws at them.
Flea, 49, real name Michael Balzary, said: "I met Anthony when I was 15. We did mad s*** and got into a lot of trouble, but we always had our own ideas and kooky concepts.
"We constructed our own ways of thinking, our own way of being friends and how we wanted to fit into the world. That's how it all started.
"One day we were out at some weird water park in the valley and we'd smoked a joint and couldn't get home.
"We saw this guy driving down the street who was in our geometry class at school and he pulled over. We didn't know it but he gave us a ride in his Datsun B210 and we hit it off.
"He played guitar and had a band and he was the one who told me to play bass. That was Hillel - our original guitarist."
In August this year, their 10th album, I'm With You, went to number one in the UK. A new single, Monarchy Of Roses, is out on Monday.
After so many years together, they have a catalogue of unheard music but any anthology is still a way off. Flea admitted: "When we're 90 we might release it. We just want to put out the records that make sense to us now."
A Billboard review from 1985 said they weren't suitable for all audiences.
But the band, who began in the LA punk scene and went through a funk metal phase, have survived to become international big sellers with records like 1991's Blood Sugar Sex Magik. They hit their commercial peak with 1999's 16 million-selling Californication and showed their melodic side with 2002's By The Way.
Some older fans felt they'd sold out.
But Anthony argued: "I think the audience became suitable to us over the years. We never made a decision to become more suitable, the audience slowly accepted us for who we are.
"At the start, we really were crass and brash and unpalatable for the masses. But I really loved that Billboard review - I think that got us signed.
"That was the show when my girlfriend - who looked like a canary who had become a peacock - came out in the middle of the set while I was dancing with this naked girl. She hated that, so she climbed on stage, punched the girl, then threw me down and tried to kick me in the balls.
"But I would not stop. I wouldn't let the band down. We were playing Foxy Lady and I finished the song."
Of course, their off-stage antics, drug abuse and womanising have made them as famous as their music.
But the group aren't shy of hard work and have long known that a band can't tap into the rock and roll clichés then roll up at a recording studio and write a new album.
Flea said: "Igor Stravinsky sat at his piano every day. Some days it was boring and rubbish and his wife was chewing his ear off - it was mundane.
"The same thing goes for Nick Cave. He goes to work. Every day.
"Nick Cave is the greatest living songwriter. He is the greatest, it's between him and Neil Young.
"You have to get in and do it. There are great moments of creativity that are like falling in love, they're erotic and free falling, but sometimes it's not fun. It's work."

Pese a ser una de las agrupaciones más importantes del rock hoy en día, el célebre bajista de los Red Hot Chili Peppers, Flea, admitió que la banda ha perdido algo de encanto y magia tras la partida del guitarrista John Frusciante, informó el sitio BassPlayer.com.
El artista reconoció que él y Frusciante habían desarrollado una química interesante dentro de la banda que comanda el vocalista Anthony Kiedis, por lo que ha resultado complicado adaptarse al nuevo hombre de la guitarra, Josh Klinghoffer.
“Con Josh comenzábamos a tocar algunos temas y yo preguntaba... ‘Ok, ¿cuándo empezará el chico a ponerle algo de magia al proceso de creación?”, y él simplemente no lo lograba. Posteriormente comprendí que estaba esperando algo así porque era un aspecto al que me había acostumbrado (con Frusciante)”, indicó Flea.
Irónicamente, Kiedis destacó recientemente la incorporación de Klinghoffer, mencionando que le había dado frescura a los Red Hot Chili Peppers, cuarteto que regresó este año al mercado, tras publicar su ábum I’m with You.
Canción de I'm With You, dedicada a un viejo amigo de la banda que falleció en 2009 a causa de un infarto.
Brendan Mullen fue un escritor británico y el dueño de “The Masque”, un famoso club de rock de Los Angeles desde donde apoyaba a grupos como Jane’s Addiction, The Go-Go’s o The Germs además de a la banda liderada por Kiedis. En una entrevista para la revista Q se recogían unas declaraciones del propio Anthony sobre el tributo a Mullen: “Brendan murió el primer día que empezamos ensayar con Klinghoffer. Cuando escuchamos las noticias empezamos a tocar sin ni siquiera hablar. Se fue una persona magnífica. Probablemente lo segundo que salió de aquella sesión fueron las bases de Brendan’s Death Song“
Red Hot Chili Peppers, en concreto su cantante Anthony Kiedis, ha dado una entrevista a Daily Record donde comenta la evolución musical sufrida por la banda desde sus comienzos hasta ahora. Afirma que no es que hayan cambiado un sonido más acorde a la gran mayoría del público sino que es este el que ha ido aceptando a Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Añadió que: “No creo que hayamos aceptado cambiar el sonido para el público en general. Solamente la gente se ha ido adaptando a Red Hot Chili Peppers. Al principio eramos groseros, muy lejos de lo convencional”.
También afirma el secreto de la longevidad y se trata de: “Pensar que cada concierto es el último. Nunca pensamos en ser una banda de rock, simplemente queremos tocar una noche, salimos y lo hacemos. Creo que es la mejor manera de poder continuar paso a paso”.
Lo que es cierto es que despues de vender más de 70 millones de discos y tras décadas en activo, Red Hot Chili Peppers con su reciente álbum I’m With You, siguen en la cresta de la ola.
Una década después de que cancelaran sus planes de tocara para los fans en Tel Aviv, los Red Hot Chili Peppers estarán dando un show en Israel.
En el 2001, debido a la ola del exitoso álbum “Californication” de la banda, vendieron 20.000 tickets para dar un concierto en el Parque Hayarkon de Tel Aviv. Sin embargo, luego de una ola de ataques terroristas, la banda canceló su visita a Israel.
“Estoy seguro de que el público israelí entiende cuánto trabajo y esfuerzo hemos hecho para llevar esta increíble banda a Israel. Estoy contento de que los músicos y sus representantes hayan cumplido con su palabra de visitar y compensar por el show que fue cancelado en el 2001”, dijo el productor Shuki Weiss.
Luego de una ola de rumores en las últimas semanas sobre los próximos conciertos de los Red Hot Chili Peppers, Weiss confirmó que el show se llevará a cabo el 10 de septiembre del 2012 en el Parque Hayarkon de Tel Aviv. Las entradas estarán a la venta en un precio especial de 320 shekels y luego aumentarán a 390. Los tickets VIP también estarán disponibles por 750 shekels primero y luego 1200.
Los Peppers visitarán Israel como parte de la gira mundial que promueve su más reciente y décimo álbum. Serán parte del festival Picnic organizado por Weiss.
